The answer is simply YES! The dairy industry can be considered far more cruel and inhuman than the meat industry. In order to produce more milk, the cows are pumped with hormones and antibiotics. They are forced to become pregnant because milk is produced only during lactation. Their babies are kept away from them so that there is more milk to sell. Cows are known to have a wide range of emotions. They can be really friendly and often form friendships with one and another when kept in better conditions. But our world that has given more importance to capitalism than humanity has confined these mammals, forced them into labor and inflicted immense pain. They are often forced to sleep in their own urine and dung and rarely allowed to go outside. This unnatural form of breeding had left the milk industry with unhealthy produce. Humans that consume this milk suffer from indigestion, heart-burn, and pesticides may cause cancer. Every day 26 million cows die in the dairy industry in the USA alone. What have we done and what have we become? We were taught that jail was for punishment yet no one's bats an eye when animals are kept confined. We are taught that murder is wrong yet we kill so many animals each and every day. The Mayan’s predicted the world would end in 2012, maybe it has. Maybe the world ended because we lost sight of what was humane and what was cruel.
Female cows are artificially inseminated after they turn one. The calf is separated from its mother on day one and fed milk replacement including cattle’s blood. Most male cows will face the slaughterhouse. The cows lactate for 10months and the cycle of artificial insemination continues till the cow dies. What good can come out of such unnatural practices? This milk is not even healthy for human beings. Lactose intolerance, cancer, heart disease is just some of the repercussions we must face for this gross injustice. Surely what goes around comes back around.
These herbivores are forced fed a high protein diet like chicken and fish waste to increase milk production.
Humans and milk- human beings are not supposed to be consuming another species milk. The milk produced by cows suit the nutritional requirements of cow babies that have four stomachs and need to gain hundreds of pounds. Additional a study found that human beings who suffered from fatigue, headaches, digestive problems felt much better after cutting dairy from their diets.
Ahimsa dairy products- ahimsa which means non-violent in the Hindu culture becomes a way of life for many people. As humans slowly but surely have come to the realization that we have nearly destroyed the sanctity of the world. Ahimsa dairy products and produced more naturally. The cows have not force-fed protein diets and are allowed to roam freely on pastures along with their babies. Although the milk is produced in lesser quantities, organic milk is much healthier for the human body. Children under five have reported better health when fed with organic grass-fed cows milk. Paul MacCartney once said that if slaughterhouses had glass walls, everyone would have been vegetarian. We must protect and care for the animals that provide us with sustainable products. Not just for our own welfare but because it is the humane thing to do.
